Stuart Munro welcomes a new generation of Scottish solicitors to the legal profession

Livingstone Brown’s Managing Director, Stuart Munro, had the honour of welcoming to the profession Scotland’s newest solicitors as the guest speaker at last Friday's Law Society of Scotland’s admissions ceremony.

Included within the cohort was the firm’s very own second year trainee, Laura Millar.

Drawing on his own career in law, Stuart spoke about the interaction between politics and law and how each influences and shapes the other. He also drew attention to the media’s current portrayal of the legal profession:

"Lawyers sometimes get a bad press. We’re accused of being woke or lefty.  We should never apologise for standing up for the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of citizens.

We’re accused of being greedy. We should never apologise for demanding that everyone in society should have access to justice, or for complaining about our seriously deficient legal aid system.

Our skill is in communicating. We are in a privileged position, and in my view have a duty to speak truth to power."
