In this very high profile case, the client appeared on petition charged with fraud, arising out of the acquisition of Rangers Football Club.
A team, under the leadership of Stuart Munro, was assembled to deal with the prosecution. Stuart had a series of consultations with the client in London and elsewhere. The scale of the Crown case was immense, with over a hundred thousand pages of productions, and almost three hundred witnesses. Countless complex issues arose, including the navigation of legal professional privilege claims. Project management and spreadsheet software was put to extensive use.
Detailed representations on sufficiency were made to the Crown. When the case was indicted, a series of legal issues were raised with the court, including challenges to the relevancy of the charges on the indictment, prejudicial pre-trial publicity and oppression. These challenges were successful, with all charges against the client being either withdrawn by the Crown or dismissed by the court.
